PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Our students and staff continue to work hard at reaching the goals of our Writing Focus. At the beginning
of the year we set goals to help us move forward and increase achievement. We have just completed our
second set of school-wide assessments to monitor our progress, in both English and Chinese. Our results
show that our students are improving significantly . These tests measure five different areas related to writ-
ing, and the percentage of students who are meeting both the acceptable standard and the standard of excel-
lence has increased in all five areas. Congratulations students, congratulations teachers!

PARENTS INVOLVED IN MEYONOHK
Hello, my name is Glenn Kirkland and I am the Key Communicator for P.I.I.M. It is my responsibility to repre-
sent our school and council at monthly meetings at the Centre for Education and report back to the council. This
is an important position because, through my reports, Mr. Allen and PIIM are kept abreast of new information re-
garding about Edmonton Public Schools
A special thank you must be extended to all the staff and volunteers who made the carnival on the evening of Feb-
ruary 6 such a great event. Personally, my favourite venue was the concession put on by some of our volunteer
parents, but I know all the attractions and demonstrations were well received. Some upcoming events are a pizza
lunch, spell-a-thon and a school dance. Check your children’s backpacks for future information.
On February 13, the City graders provided us with some mountainous windrows around the school to further
hamper our already limited drop-off and parking areas. The front and east sides of the school are “Drop-Off
Zones” only. This is a strict regulation and is in place for the safety of the children. Please help us ease our park-
ing and traffic woes by obeying the signs and our excellent patrols.
Parents are key partners in the education of their children. You, the parents, are actually PIIM. Your opinions
and suggestions are important, as PIIM is your voice in the school and the education of your children. Please at-
tend our next meeting March 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the staff room. Supervision is provided free of charge for your
children. I hope to see some new faces at the next meeting.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CARNIVAL THANK YOU'S
On February 6th, Meyonohk students, parents and staff celebrated the coming of the Year of the Sheep
with enthusiasm and flair. In the afternoon, students from all classes participated by organizing carnival
activities. We were also wonderfully entertained by Meyonohk students performing in Ms. Zhu's Lion
Dance, Ms. Li's Traditional Dance, and Ms. Tian's and Ms. Fu's Dragon Dance. Students enjoyed the pet-
ting zoo in the gymnasium, complete with live sheep to say Huanying to the Year of the Sheep, and a
miniature horse to say Zaijian to the Year of the Horse.
In the evening we invited parents to join the celebration. In addition to the activities of the afternoon, we
were entertained by the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica with some traditional Chinese music and a fabu-
lous percussion performance. We were also treated to a spectacular display of Wu Shu Martial Arts by stu-
dents of the Gi Hong Tai Chi College. To help raise funds to pay for our celebrations and to ensure none
of us went hungry, parents organized a very successful (and tasty) Chinese Food sale.
There are so many people to thank. The following list, in no particular order, is as comprehensive as can
be. If we have missed any names, we apologize, and hope that you know that your contributions were very
much appreciated!

LAST, BUT BY NO MEANS LEAST………
Thank you to all our wonderful staff, for all their enthusiasm
and creativity in setting up the carnival. It was a wonderful
sight to behold, and couldn't be done without everyone's coop-
eration. A very special thank you to our wonderful, patient cus-
todians, Mr. Gonzalez and Mr. Guineden, who are always so
very helpful.

CULTURAL EVENTS
Meyonohk Cultural and Special Events
Committee is pleased to announce the be-
ginning of an on-going program featuring
high-quality cultural performances, brought to our
school at a very reasonable price.
We have booked two favourite performance com-
panies in the coming months: Alberta Opera and
the Foothills Brass. Both of these organizations
have performed at our school before and have re-
ceived very positive reviews.
We believe a program of quality performances of
dance, drama, music and other cultural enterprises
will stimulate the interest of the students and will
further enrich the educational experience at
Meyonohk School. Teachers will undoubtedly find
creative ways to use the students’ experiences with
the performances to continue work on the school
focus of improved student writing.
Most performances will cost around $2.00. What a
bargain this is! To purchase tickets for public per-
formances of these artists would be considerably
more expensive. We expect that all students will
participate enthusiastically in viewing these per-
formances. We would like to thank the Parents In-
volved In Meyonohk group which has kindly
agreed to pay for the presentation by Foothills
Brass on March 11th at 2:00 p.m.
WELCOME TO OUR
STUDENT TEACHERS
We would like to warmly welcome our
four new student teachers from the University of
Alberta: Miss Morrison in Rooms 10 & 15; Mrs.
Fox in Room 20; Mr. Samra in Room 019; and
Mr. Binder in Room 18.
SPRING BREAK/EASTER
Our students will have Spring Break from
March 29 to April 6, and will return to school
Monday, April 7. Easter Break is April 18 to April
21.
LIBRARY NEWS
Thank you very much to Kristi Wong, who
donated a book to the library in honour of her birth-
day.
The deadline to order Chinese books is March 7,
2003. Contact Mrs. King in the library if you have
any questions.
The Book Fair will be held on April 30, in conjunc-
tion with our Open House. If you can help with the
book fair, please call Mrs. King.
LOST & FOUND
Lost and found items will be displayed in the
hallways on March 6 & 7.
CASUAL LUNCHROOM
HELP NEEDED
We are hiring one or two lunchroom super-
visors to work on a casual basis, to fill in only when
our regular supervisors are unable to work. A close
proximity to the school, or reliable transportation is
important, as we often call the day a replacement is
needed. If interested, please come in to the school
and fill out an application form.
REMINDER-BUS PASS AND LUNCH FEES ARE
DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH MONTH!
